ICCM was established in 1989 by Tadhg McInerney, originally of Limerick, Ireland, at the request of fellow Milwaukee resident and Dublin native, John Gleeson. Gleeson, a University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Irish studies professor, and long-time affiliate of Irish Fest, was interested in somehow including currachs in this country's largest Celtic festival, held annually on Milwaukee's lakefront. The Mulkerrin brothers of the Pittsburgh Curragh Club - one of the oldest currach organizations in this country - built and brought a boat for the new Milwaukee team to race at the 1989 Irish Fest.
Soon afterward, ICCM joined the North American Currach Association, a conference that had until that point been a primarily East-Coast organization. The original NACA teams were Annapolis, Albany, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Boston. With the addition of the Milwaukee team, the currach racing tradition has spread to the Midwest, the original mission of McInerney and Gleeson. New Orleans later joined the conference and in 2000, another NACA team sprung up west of the Ohio River, in Columbus, bringing the competition a little closer to home for ICCM.
Location
ICCM has boats at McKinley Marina on Milwaukee's East Side and 20 miles west of Milwaukee in Oconomowoc. Milwaukee practices are held on Lake Michigan, mainly inside the breakwall, with occasional ventures up the Milwaukee River; Oconomowoc practices are held on Lac LaBelle.
Equipment
The Club owns five four-seat racing boats, each equipped with oars and adjustable foot braces.
Recreation and Racing
ICCM welcomes both competitive and recreational rowers. Eight annual regattas, held between June and October, offer competitive challenges for racing members.Flexible weekly practice schedules ensure all members have a chance to get in the boat at their convenience.
Members
Because ICCM accommodates both recreational and competitive rowers, members range in age from 17 to 60 and are of varying athletic abilities. While rowing can be a vigorous aerobic activity, there is little impact on joints, thus providing athletic opportunities for those who have suffered injuries in other sports.
Membership Information
Use of ICCM boats and equipment is limited to those who have completed the waiver form and paid annual dues. For more information on membership, e-mail kscheuing@hotmail.com or ladiesrugby@yahoo.com or call (414) 962-1290.
